TAOBAO MUST-BUYS: Summer Shopaholic Edition

My mom was ecstatic when we moved to Hong Kong: "Ally, you can’t shop on Taobao anymore– they don’t ship international " she said with an evil glint in her eye. With dejection heavy on my heart, I decided to change my Taobao address to my new one as a last ditch effort and also to commemorate my era of taobaoing. And that was when it happened: the shipping under some of my favorite vendor still displayed 免运费: free shipping bishes. I realized with glee that my Madre dear was gravely wrong: most vendors DO ship to Hong. Kong. The era hasn’t ended.

And hence, this piece.

We shall once again slate our discussion on the negative consequences of fast fashion/consumerist culture for another time, but for now, let us just (once again) indulge in being able to buy anything our heart so desires for the simple price of a coffee. I present: Summer shopaholic edition 2.

Before we get into it, I’m just gonna briefly bring up Baopals: a platform that allows you to shop Taobao in English. For a lot of us who aren’t completely comfortable with browsing and searching in Chinese, Baopals makes navigating Taobao a lot easier. FURTHERMORE, I know a lot of us have problems paying in Alipay (there’s a lot of administrative barriers for expats to set one up), and using a credit card for online shopping can be a hassle. Taobao, only taking Alipay and bank cards, becomes kind of impossible to deal with. Wechat pay on the other hand has become second nature to us.
