With a post-grad senior on hand let loose in a brimming city with infinite opportunity (to spend money :^) ), be prepared for a lot of posts on food, art and random adventures! SUCH as to this super cute bakery slash cafe perfect for a chill Wednesday afternoon work-sesh.

There’s two Bread etc.’s in Shanghai, and I visited the Nanjing road one a week ago for brunch with Marie and Matthew. It’s entrance and outdoors sitting area is tucked in a cute alleyway, and entering through the metal-framed glass doors reveals the downstairs bakery (with a glass area where you can peer into the kitchen to watch bread getting #baked!!). We didn’t stay for the #allywaytalk though and instead, went upstairs to the more quiet sitting space that vibed "rustic, cozy lodge meets European-classy cafe”. The 360 shaded glass floor-to-ceiling windows showing the famous shanghainese sycamore trees surrounding the restaurant gave the feeling that you were nestled in a cozy tree house. Plus, I don’t know about you, but marble tables seriously turn me on, and the fancy dangly lights were a nice touch.

I have to say however, that the light, brunch food didn’t live up to what I expected. Part of it is also because I ordered sandwiches at a restaurant whose name is literally a baked good?? So tip: definitely get their gorgeous PASTRIES - they’re mouthwatering, yet we didn’t try any cause we were so full.. :(.

What Marie, Matthew and I ordered:

  1. Yoghurt with homemade granola and fruit mix (¥48) (9/10)

  2. Sandwich with Avocado, bell pepper, boiled egg, chili, red onions ¥30 (for half, ¥55 for whole) (7/10)

  3. Beef Sandwich with caramelized onion, Dijon mustard, horse radish ¥65

  4. Latte ¥30 (8/10)

Overall price range per-person: ¥50-100

Everything made there just felt so fresh –– even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of the sandwich fillings, the sandwich bread was amazing (I mean, it has to live up to it’s name, literally).

The price range is very manageable for such a classy spot, and while the latte was slightly too bitter for my very Starbucks-subdued palate, I thought the yoghurt was fucking amazing –– crunchy paired with chewy in a very satisfying balance.

So once again, I definitely recommend this place for a chill afternoon (we went biking afterwards on Nanjing street – very fun and convenient location), and DEFINITELY check out the pastries. Don’t be a fool, eat what they’re best at making :).

Happy tree-housing!
